Patriots Trade Another Backup

Jimmy Garoppolo has gone from coveted backup to starter... finally.

The Patriots shipped their intriguing QB2 to San Francisco for their Second Round pick this Spring. Given that the 49ers are one of only two winless teams, that pick will likely be in the first few selections of the round (mid-30s).

This means two things:

1) Garoppolo finally gets the chance to prove if he is the franchise quarterback that some believe he can be, and do it for a 49ers team who hasn't had a franchise quarterback in the 21st century.

2) The Patriots must be pretty confident that Tom Brady not only plays past 2017, but for the next several seasons. His contract runs through the 2019 season when Brady will be 42 years old.

It also means that the Patriots are currently without a backup quarterback.
